In just a few short years, the investment made by the Mayor of London - to the tune of £314 million - has seen The Royal Docks transformed beyond all recognition, becoming by far one of the capital's most successful regeneration projects. And this, by all accounts, is just the beginning, with a further £8 billion flowing into the area over the course of the next few decades, bringing with it at least 60,000 new jobs. Safe to say then, the future of this district looks bright, as it continues its frankly remarkable metamorphosis into a major business and cultural hub, in what, for many, is a shining example of how to take on a project of this size and get it done right.
From the start, Royal Eden Docks was the jewel in the crown of this colossal undertaking, a thoroughly modern living environment, the sheer quality of its design sending ripples through the industry. This is perhaps hardly surprising considering the level of talent involved: architects Skidmore, Owings and Merril have, to say the least, a proven track record in this arena, behind global projects like 35 Hudson Yards in New York, Dubai’s Burji Khalifa and the China World Trade Centre in Beijing, to name but a few. Here, they set their minds to crafting a development that’s truly innovative, whilst placing resident satisfaction front and centre. Meanwhile, the critics are, for once, unanimous in their approval. Something, let’s face it, almost no one saw coming.
Resident amenities at Royal Eden Docks easily rank as some of the best anywhere in the UK, if not the world. The 5,000 sq metres of landscaped greenspace, for instance, is a fabulously bucolic inclusion, simultaneously lush and tasteful, and which, perhaps most importantly, feels a million miles from the teeming metropolis that’s actually just a short distance away. A gym, pool, sauna and cinema are almost standard for this type of development these days, but a rooftop running track is something of a revelation, especially for those of us who need all the encouragement we can muster when it comes to upping our jogging game. The views alone mean wanting to get up there and complete a few circuits. Please note Royal Eden Docks amenities will be available for residents in 2024.
Of course, wherever you are in London, connectivity is key. No surprise to hear, then, that Royal Docks just happens to be one of the city’s most plugged-in districts, offering rapid travel times to Canary Wharf, the West End, The City and London City Airport. It’s also just a short hop to Oxford Street, and access to the Elizabeth Line, Royal Victoria and Excel London mean getting anywhere is now significantly easier than it was even just a few short years ago. Nearby educational institutions only add to the prestige and include the London School of Economics, Imperial College, King’s College and University College London.
Ultimately, though, Royal Eden Dock’s real selling point is what it represents: a community-led venture that celebrates everything that’s great about living in London, whilst at the same time pushing things forward with real flair and positivity. The future, it seems, starts here.
