Area Guide

With first documents of the area dating back to 1889 and situated in South East London, Bermondsey is rich in history and neighbours famous landmarks including Borough Market and Tower Bridge.

Originally marshland; the area was most famously embodied by Jacob’s Island in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist and was notorious for being where dock workers lived.

Over the last 20 years, the area has undergone major regeneration which has brought with it new housing, industry and a vibrant community feel, despite its central London location.

The architecture speaks to its rich history with cobbled streets and converted warehouses. With a mix of offices, housing, restaurants and shops Bermondsey is a well-lit area that is busy from dawn to dusk.

Lifestyle:
From the Fashion and Textile Museum to the White Cube Gallery, famous for hosting artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin, Bermondsey Street is the bustling epicentre of the area.

And every Friday morning just across the road, between 6 am and 2 pm, there is a vibrant antique market selling everything from beautiful silver cutlery to collectable cameras, which sees locals and visitors alike mingling amongst the treasures for sale.

Bermondsey Street really has everything covered, even your gourmet grocery needs. Bermondsey Corner offers anything from Champagne to cured meats and the family-run business promises to deliver “quality, traceability, transparency, and sustainability” in its products.

Here’s our top recommended list of shops, museums and galleries in the area:

Food for thought
If you’re less about the shopping and more about the food then you won’t be short of options in this area of South-East London. Bermondsey is in no way in short supply of delicious eateries or fabulous cocktail bars.

Start your morning with a coffee at WatchHouse, which specialises in industry-leading coffee and authentic food, located in a beautifully designed space inspired by the local area.

After having a wander around the numerous streets and parks, head to Comptoir Gourmand. Famous throughout London, their Bermondsey Street bakery is not to be missed. Cast your eyes over their mouth-watering pastries, but be sure to try their ‘Crownie’, a delightful fusion of both a croissant and brownie. Trust us, and not just because we have a similar name, it’s enough to make you want to move to the area!

And why not detour via Borough Market? Dating back to the 12th Century, here is the perfect spot to marvel at the array of delicious food, drink and groceries, all based under a railway viaduct.
To finish off the food tour, why not head to Flour and Grape, a fabulous spot that covers all your pasta needs. Despite not taking bookings, they have a walk-in system down to perfection and pasta dishes to match. Before you head home to your swanky Bermondsey pad, why not stop off at Bermondsey Arts Club for a nightcap on Tower Bridge Road. If you’re lucky enough to make it on a Wednesday, their live Jazz night is a real treat and adds a certain “je ne sais quoi” to the speakeasy-inspired bar.
