The benefits of having houseplants have now been scientifically proven, improving mental health, productivity and overall well-being. They can even reduce blood-pressure, stress and improve your attention-span, and are a wonderful opportunity for you to express yourself creatively, quickly becoming an intrinsic part of the design of your home. A fun and easy way to transform a room without redecorating, there are no strict ‘rules’, but here are a few simple tips…

Create a Group Display

A group display of plants can create a focal point in any space, providing a captivating, natural feel. Plants can be displayed on shelves or sideboards in neat rows, or gathered closer together for a more organic effect. You can also combine cut flowers with houseplants, using colours and textures that work in harmony with each other. Shades that contrast with the main colour scheme in that room is always a good way to go, and if you’re applying the rule of three, select different hues for each flower.

Use the Walls

If, for any reason, you lack enough surfaces for plants, you can always make the most of your wall space instead. Hanging plants are a great option and can look truly spectacular. For instance, darker greens against white walls never go out of fashion, and the kind of hooks and brackets required to mount pretty much any kind of houseplant are inexpensive and easy to install. It’s always good to do a bit of research, as each plant will have its own unique set of needs in terms of how much sunlight and water they require. The rewards, however, speak for themselves.

A Bedroom Oasis

When it comes to putting plants in a bedroom, utilising the windowsill is always a good place to start as the sunlight will keep them healthy and happy. Greenery above the bed can also bring a real sense of calm. One way to do this is to install a shelf and fill it with potted plants, and the inclusion of a few hanging varieties will really soften the look. Peace lilies, Boston ferns and English ivy all suit the bedroom perfectly. After all, plants are known for their air-cleaning properties, which in turn means aiding and promoting a good night’s sleep.

Brighten Your Bathroom

Putting houseplants in your bathroom really enhances the atmosphere, but you’ll need specific types that can survive in low light and withstand humidity. Spider plants are ideal as direct sunlight can actually harm their leaves, and Orchids also thrive in indirect light. Meanwhile, using bamboo is a timeless, tropical choice that doesn't require soil, making it clean and super-easy to maintain. Pothos - commonly known as Money Plants - come in many styles, love high humidity and look superb in a hanging basket.

Indoor Trees

Indoor trees effortlessly breathe more nature into your home and can have a hugely positive impact on your interior design. Some regulate humidity, helping to maintain a comfortable and healthy climate. Requiring minimal watering and pruning, an indoor tree is ideal for anyone living a busy life or who has limited gardening experience. They also live for many years, adding beauty and even companionship to any space for extended periods of time. Charming and alluring, the right indoor tree is always a personal, welcome addition to any modern living environment.
